The racing fraternity watched in awe as Qatar raider Kalino won the world’s richest race for Purebred Arabians – the Euros 1.2 million Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan Jewel Crown (Group 1) on Sunday, November 8, at the Abu Dhabi Equestrian Club race course as the curtain came down on the 2015 activities of the HH Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Global Arabian Horse Flat Racing Festival.

In a stunning display, the HH Sheikh Abdullah Bin Khalifa Al Thani-owned Kalino, under big race jockey Olivier Peslier, outclassed some of the best Purebred Arabian horses to score a memorable win for trainer Alban de Mieulle.

Addressing a press conference on Wednesday evening, November 4, at the Anantara Eastern Mangroves Ballroom, Ms Lara Sawaya, Executive Director of the HH Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Global Arabian Horse Flat Racing Festival, Chairperson of the International Federation of Horse Racing Academies (IFHRA) and Chairperson of Ladies & Apprentice Racing Committees in the International Federation of Arabian Horse Racing Authorities (IFAHR), promised that the Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan Crown Jewel coupled with the finals o the HH Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak Ladies World Championship  and the HH Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak Apprentice Championship were going to be entertaining affairs.

The General Assembly meeting of the International Federation of Horse Racing Academies (IFHRA), which was held on Wednesday, November 4, 2015, at Eastern Mangroves Hotel in Abu Dhabi, approved 12 names to receive the Racing Scholarship Fund, RSF, a first of its kind mentorship programme initiated by the IFHRA.

The board had received 19 applications for the scholarship scheme out of which the RSF Selection Committee zeroed down on 12 applicants representing different countries. Those selected are Regan Bayliss from Australia, Ashley Edwards from Canada, Barbara Szentes from Hungary, Ryan McKeever from Ireland, Soungyi from Korea, Kamic Grzybowski from Poland, Nicolle Disdier from Puerto Rico, Eva Thilderkvist from Sweden, Vahdettin Kaplan from Turkey, Aaron West from the United States and Tom Marquand and Ryan Colley from the United Kingdom.

It was a dramatic night at the Hippodrome of Cidade Jardim in Sao Paulo, Brazil as the HH Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Global Arabian Horse Flat Racing Festival made a debut in Latin America with the HH Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak Apprentice World Championship (IFAHR) race on October 26.

Brazilian Apprentice jockey Roberlei Viana Filho was not on the starting list but got a chance to ride Heron HVP after Chilean jockey Benjamin Sancho failed to turn up.

Viana grabbed that opportunity and demolished the opposition to win on Heron HVP and clinch the final berth available to race in the final of the HH Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak Apprentice World Championship (IFAHR) in Abu Dhabi on November 8, 2015.

Duindigt, The Netherlands - Raya C won the fifth and final race of the Wathba Stud Farm Cup series in The Netherlands, held under the umbrella of the HH Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Global Arabian Horse Flat Racing Festival.

On Sunday, Raya C under Rebecca Danz got the better of AF Deema under Koeman Clijmans to win the Wathba Stud Farm Cup 5 at the Draf-en Renbaan Duindigt on Sunday, October 11.

Petruschka under Anthony Deau and Derham under Cindy Klinkenburg finished third and fourth respectively in the 8-horse field.

French Apprentice lady jockey Isis Magnin on the Awn Al Aidarous-owned Burj Al Arab won the Prix Fleur d’ Avril HH Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak Apprentice World Championship race in Tarbes on Sunday, October 11, to become the 8th jockey to qualify for the championship finale on November 8 in Abu Dhabi.

In fact Magnin on the 4-year-old Burj Al Arab had finished second by a neck to Paxan ridden by Niven Marday from Mauritius but she lodged an objection on the grounds of interference by the latter on the home straight.

After an inquiry by the Stewards, Magnin’s appeal was upheld and Burj Al Arab was promoted to the winner’s position and Paxan under the Mauritian was relegated to second place. Sixteen-year-old Moroccan Omar Lakjal on Cristal De Ghazal and Georgia Cox on Forgehill Cartier finished third and fourth respectively. The winning time for the 1500-metre turf contest was 1:29.70.

The 1200-metre Wathba Stud Farm Sprint Cup, a Group 3 race, was held on October 8 at the Jagersro Racecourse with ten runners in contention.

Anna Pilroth rode the Dahess son Macallan to a narrow win over Ghallab under Per-Anders Graberg.

Afra Al Suwaidi, the individual gold medal winner and also member of the Team championship in last year’s ride said, “We are confident. We have had a feel of the terrain here and though it is a bit hot we are looking forward to a good ride tomorrow.”

Al Mazroui staved off a strong challenge from the Spanish and Italian riders as he negotiated the scenic but challenging course adjoining the Garda River in Segurta Park in 5 hours 26 minutes and 56 seconds at an average time of 22.02kmph.

The 23-year-old Canadian apprentice jockey said he was over the moon after securing a berth in a dream final of the HH Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak Apprentice Championship in Abu Dhabi.

In the Festival’s second race of the day, Canadian apprentice jockey Brandon Duchaine brought Kasir Al Khalediah home in the sixth round of the HH Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak Apprentice World Championship.

During the HH Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Global Arabian Horse Flat Racing Festival’s World Arabian Horse Racing Conference held in Warsaw in May, a large number of the UAE connections of Purebred Arabian racing had raised many issues and the Festival had decided to provide a platform for them in the UAE.

As a result of that The HH Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Global Arabian Horse Flat Racing Festival’s Friends Committee (representing Purebred Arabian Horse Breeders, Owners, Trainers and Jockeys) was formed on Saturday, August 1, 2015.

HH Sheikh Mansoor Festival stages first-ever race in Norway

The HH Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Global Arabian Horse Flat Racing Festival made its debut in Norway with a Wathba Stud Farm Cup race in Ovrevoll earlier this month. Labwah, trained by Mrs. Pia Hoiom and ridden by Pers-Anders Graberg won the 1800-metre race in which seven Arabian horses took part.

Labwah finished a quarter-of-a-length ahead of Daraahem under Charlotte Goss with W Catchcash under Anna Pilroth ion third place over four lengths behind.
